Inspired by Period Clothing

Of late I've been inspired by period gowns. I thought I would share a few more with you. I picture the heroines in my series, Daughters of the Potomac, in these. Although they are beautiful, I cannot imagine having worn stays, corsets, and heavy gowns day in and day out.

Yep, I was born in the wrong time...I love those gowns. I know it must have been a pain to wear them, but oh how beautiful. Such a celebration of womanhood.

Hi Rita -

I'd rather admire these gorgeous, but uncomfortable, creations on someone else. :)

Blessings,
Susan

Keeping them clean was not easy either. And with people rarely bathing it was even worse. I think it is the one thing in our fiction we do not want our heroines to show. Mine bathe and keep their hair clean.

They're absolutely gorgeous, but oh, how I'd hate to have to dress like that in the heat and humidity we've been suffering here in Nashville this summer! I would DIE!

You are soooo right about issues of cleanliness. I've always thought the first thing we'd notice if we could travel back in time would be the smells. lol! And how would you keep your hair clean when all you had to wash with was lye soap?! What a number that would do on your hair...which is one reason why people so often wore wigs!

I have read that women used eggs to cleanse their hair.
